Black Warrior Mine

The Black Warrior Mine, in North Cascades National Park, is a spectacular hike through subalpine wilderness to an excellent example of late 19th/early 20th century mining operation.

 

Finding Lime Kiln

Lime Kiln, which is near the South Fork Stillaguamish River near Granite Falls, Washington, was once a stop along the Everett and Monte Cristo Railroad.  

 

Finding Monte Cristo Ghost Town

The ghost town of Monte Cristo sits high in the Cascades near the Mountain Loop Highway. It was once a gold and silver boomtown.

 

Finding Northern State Hospital

Once the largest hospital for mentally ill people in Washington State, the farm is now a recreation area. It is located just north of the Skagit River near the town of Sedro-Woolley. 

 

Finding Robe Canyon

Robe Canyon, part of the South Fork Stillaguamish River near Granite Falls, Washington, was once an important link in the Everett and Monte Cristo Railroad.  

 

Central Cascades


Finding Apex Mine

The abandoned mine Apex sits high in the Cascades above Money Creek, near the town of Index. It was second only to Monte Cristo in the gold it produced.

 

Finding Apex Mine Lower Tram

The ruins of the Apex Mine lower tram sit on Money Creek, near the town of Index. The site once brought riches down the mountainside.

 

Finding Bear Basin: Mill & Machine

Bear Basin is a sub-alpine valley near the headwaters of the North Fork Snoqualmie River. It holds mining mysteries including a large steam donkey. 

 

Finding Beaverdale Mine

The Beaverdale Mine claims are found in and above scenic Illinois Basin. There is no established trail that leads to the basin so route finding and navigation skill are essential when undertaking this adventure.

 

Finding Blewett Ghost Town

Our visit to the Blewett Ghost Town site was light on hiking but heavy on history.

Finding Damon & Pythias Mine

The abandoned mine, Damon & Pythias, once known for gold and lead,  sits at the headwaters of Money Creek, near the town of Index.

 

Finding Iron Goat: Wellington

The ghost town of Wellington sits just below Stevens Pass in the Cascade Mountains. It was once an important stop on the Great Northern Railway and became infamous for an avalanche disaster.

 

Finding Iron Goat: West

The Iron Goat West is the old path of the Great Northern Railway near Stevens Pass. It was once an area of steep switchbacks and tunnels for the trains. 

 

Finding the Iron Hose: Snoqualmie Tunnel

Walk under Snoqualmie Pass through a tunnel that was once used by the Chicago, Milwaukee, Saint Paul & Pacific Railroad.

 

Finding Lester Ghost Town

The ghost town of Lester sits on the upper reaches of the Green River near Stampede Pass. It was once an important stop for steam locomotives on the Northern Pacific Railroad.

 

Finding Liberty Ghost Town

Wander through the classic living ghost town of Liberty, between Cle Elum and Blewett Pass, which was the center of a gold rush in the 1870s. 

 

Finding Pride of Index & Honeymoon Mines

Part of the grand mining tradition of the Skykomish Valley, Pride of Index & Honeymoon abandoned mines are located along the trail to Lake Serene near the town of Index.

 

Finding San Francisco Mine

Take a short off-trail trip to a small abandoned mine.

 

Finding Sunset Mine

Hike an abandoned road to one of the largest copper mines in Washington state. 

 

South Cascades


Finding Franklin Ghost Town

The ghost town of Franklin sits above the Green River near Black Diamond. Once an important coal-producing town, Franklin became infamous for a mine disaster.
